Kings Canyon

2nd September 2016

Had a good run down from Alice Springs, stopping to refuel at Erldunda before turning west towards Uluru on the Lasseter Highway.  We turned north again 100kms in heading for Kings Canyon. We free camped 130km short of the canyon. Parked the van over the red sand dunes away from the road. Very peaceful, even got to have a campfire and a beautiful sunset for the night.

Arrived at the Kings Canyon too early for check in so did the 2km Kings Creek Walk to fill in time. Very pretty and gave us a taste of the sheer cliffs we were going to see the next day on the rim walk.

Settled into the campground and enjoyed a lovely sunset over the mountains of the Wartarrka National Park.

4th September 2016

Big day today, doing the 6km Kings Canyon Rim Walk.  The first 500m was straight up the side of the cliff on rocky stairs. Phew!

We spent the next 3 hours walking around the cliff top following the edge of the canyon. Wow, stunning views standing right on the cliff edge.

We took a few detours to various lookouts and also down into the Garden of Eden.  We stopped here for a picnic lunch.

The sheer rock faces were amazing.  The people in the pictures give a feeling of the huge scale of the canyon walls.

Our knees and feet were feeling it buy the time we descended the south wall.  So glad we did it though, Australia really is an amazing country. Uluru here we come!
